Over the past few weeks, Indonesia has been rocked by a wave of demonstrations that initially appeared to be peaceful expressions of protest, but some later turned violent. The destruction of public facilities, the arson of buildings, and even minor riots in several cities have sparked public unrest. Amidst this escalating situation, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) reiterated their strong commitment to jointly maintaining public order and national security.

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto, stated that any unlawful acts—including anarchism—will be dealt with firmly. However, at the same time, officers will carry out their duties professionally, measuredly, and based on human rights principles. This statement came in response to public concerns over the escalation of unrest and as a manifestation of the state’s responsibility to protect citizens and public facilities.

The involvement of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) is not only evident in their readiness in the field, but also through joint patrols, security operations for vital objects, and monitoring of provocative narratives on social media. The Head of the TNI Information Post, Brigadier General (Mar) Freddy Ardianzah, stated that the spread of hoaxes that attempt to divide security institutions is a real threat. The TNI will take legal action against those spreading baseless issues, as the relationship and solidarity between the TNI and Polri are being tested by the illusion of division created through provocative narratives.

In Jakarta, Bogor, and several other regions, security forces are employing a dual approach: persuasive on one hand, and firm on the other when the situation becomes a criminal offense. The National Police Chief emphasized that demonstrations are a constitutionally guaranteed human right, provided they are conducted in an orderly manner, respect the public interest, and do not damage vital public facilities. The National Police have even expanded routine patrols down to the sub-district and village levels to anticipate potential unrest early on.

Indonesian National Armed Forces Commander General Agus Subiyanto also emphasized that resolving issues through dialogue and deliberation remains a priority. Violent confrontation is not the desired path. He urged the public not to be easily provoked by those spreading baseless rumors, especially those using social media to exacerbate the situation.

Meanwhile, watchdogs like Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) have praised the decisive steps taken by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in recent days. According to IPW, tensions in several regions have begun to ease after the National Police Chief announced he would take firm action against anarchic acts. These decisive actions must remain within the law and official regulations, such as the National Police Chief’s Regulation on the use of force.

However, challenges remain significant. Provocation, whether direct in the field or via social media, remains a trigger for conflict. Hoaxes and provocative narratives alleging divisions between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) or criticizing one institution or the other are of particular concern. Solidarity between security agencies must be maintained not only by their personnel but also by how the public views and reports on the situation. Openness of information, transparency in legal action against violations, and a humane approach are all part of the strategy to mitigate conflict.

On the other hand, the public is also expected to play an active role in maintaining order. They must refrain from spreading false information, resist provocation, and express their aspirations peacefully, in accordance with the law. When the public and authorities are on the same page—namely, seeking security, peace, and justice—the potential for unrest can be mitigated.

The South Kalimantan Regional Police (Polda Kalsel) issued an urgent appeal for demonstrations to proceed peacefully, orderly, and not disrupt public order. The appeal was issued in connection with a planned demonstration in front of the South Kalimantan Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) office.

The Head of Public Relations for the South Kalimantan Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Adam Erwindi, emphasized that the South Kalimantan Regional Police respect the public’s right to express their aspirations. However, they also emphasize that the demonstration must be conducted responsibly, avoid causing unrest, and maintain order. They are overseeing the safe and orderly progress of the demonstration. “The safety and security of all is our top priority,” Erwindi said.

Within this overall dynamic, it’s clear that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) are facing a challenge not only in maintaining physical security on the streets, but also in maintaining public trust. Every action taken by the authorities is scrutinized by the public and the media; any mistake, no matter how small, could worsen the situation more than it helps. Therefore, a commitment to professionalism and adherence to the law is crucial.

Ultimately, the current situation demonstrates that despite the ongoing threat of riots and provocations, the relationship and cooperation between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) remain strong. The state is there to protect citizens, safeguard public facilities, and ensure that the people’s aspirations can be expressed without unrest. In this situation, the solidarity of security forces and active public participation are the foundation for maintaining a conducive and safe Indonesia amidst complex political and social dynamics.
