TNI Provides Sense of Security from OPM Threats in Papua

Papua – The presence of the TNI in the vulnerable areas of Papua is the answer to the prolonged fear of the community due to the terror of the Free Papua Movement (OPM). Amidst pressure and isolation, the TNI moved quickly to build trust and provide real protection, especially in Oksop District, Pegunungan Bintang Regency, and Mayuberi, Puncak Regency.
In Oksop Village, the presence of Satgas Yonif 751/VJS Koops Habema has had a major impact. After three main bridges connecting to Serambakon were destroyed by OPM, the community’s logistical access was completely paralyzed. However, the situation is now gradually recovering thanks to logistical assistance and services from the TNI.
Forban Kalakmabin, a community leader in Oksop District, said that residents began returning to their villages after the TNI arrived.
“We express our gratitude and are very thankful for the food aid. With the TNI here, we no longer have difficulty getting food,” he said.
Not only logistical assistance, the TNI also opened an emergency health post to serve residents. This post became a referral place for people who previously did not have access to basic services.
A source from Task Force 751/VJS explained that the presence of the TNI brings hope, not just security.
“The presence of the TNI is not only about security, but also new hope for the lives of people in border areas,” he said.
Meanwhile, in Mayuberi, the TNI presence is the only source of health services. OPM threats have hampered the operation of the Puskesmas since 2019 due to the high security risks for medical personnel.
Anis Murib, Head of Mayuberi Village, described the condition.
“Since the Puskesmas was established, there has been no optimal service because of the security situation that endangers health workers,” he said.
Now, residents rely on the TNI Post for medical treatment.
“We came here for medical treatment. We were greatly helped,” Anis added.
Second Lieutenant Inf Arif Natsir, Danpos Mayuberi, stated his party’s commitment to continue to be present for the community.
“We come not only to maintain sovereignty, but to listen, serve, and be part of the lives of the people,” he stressed.
This active step by the TNI reflects the dual role of soldiers: as guardians of the region and servants of humanity in the heart of Papua.
