Toll and Ticket Discounts: President Prabowo Eases Homecoming Travel

By: Gita Dwi Pratiwi*
During special occasions such as long holidays or religious festivities, many people take the opportunity to return to their hometowns or visit family. However, transportation costs often become a major obstacle for many in carrying out this tradition. Recognizing the importance of family togetherness, the toll and ticket discounts provided by the government under President Prabowo’s leadership have become a breath of fresh air for the public. This policy not only facilitates access but also creates opportunities for more frequent reunions with loved ones.
One of the most impactful policies is the reduction of toll rates during specific periods. With this discount, travel costs on toll roads become more affordable, relieving people from the burden of high tariffs. This is crucial, considering that toll roads are the primary choice for those looking to shorten travel time. Moreover, during peak seasons such as long holidays or religious festivities, the volume of homecoming and return traffic surges significantly. The toll discount serves as an effective solution to ease the financial burden faced by the public.
The policy initiated by President Prabowo Subianto regarding discounted airline tickets and toll rates to support the 2025 Eid homecoming is seen as a progressive step, demonstrating his concern for the people’s needs. As the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) stated that President Prabowo has instructed that this policy be designed with a pro-people approach, providing tangible evidence that the government listens to and understands the challenges faced by the public.
Eid homecoming, a deeply rooted tradition in Indonesia’s social and cultural life, often brings various challenges, particularly concerning the rising costs of transportation. Increasing toll rates and expensive airline tickets have long been major barriers for the lower and middle classes in fulfilling this annual tradition. By implementing discounts on tolls and airline tickets, the government offers a significant relief for many families wishing to reunite with their relatives in their hometowns.
Additionally, discounts on transportation tickets, such as trains and flights, also have a significant impact. For those who prefer public transport, this policy allows them to plan their trips at a lower cost. The decision to offer ticket discounts not only reduces travel expenses but also enhances people’s mobility in maintaining family connections.
The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK), Pratikno, emphasized the importance of reviewing infrastructure readiness to support smooth Eid homecoming travel, particularly in terms of public safety and comfort. The government’s efforts to ensure the readiness of roads, bridges, and disaster-prone areas such as landslides and floods reflect its commitment to ensuring public safety during the homecoming season.
Pratikno also highlighted the implementation of the Nusantara Hub, as well as the toll discount and lower domestic airfare prices, as part of the government’s initiatives to make Eid homecoming more organized and efficient. These initiatives not only address logistical aspects but also demonstrate the government’s awareness of the challenges often faced by the public during the homecoming period.
Through this policy, the government also supports social and cultural stability within communities. The tradition of homecoming, often associated with religious festivities, is a crucial moment for strengthening family bonds. With more affordable transportation, people can travel long distances more freely without financial worries. This not only fosters familial togetherness but also strengthens social ties within communities.
The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, revealed that airfare discounts exceeding 10% for Eid homecoming travelers are a highly appreciated measure that directly addresses the needs of the public, who have long felt burdened by high travel costs. This discount not only reduces financial strain on travelers but also provides an incentive for people to plan their homecoming or family visits during Eid more conveniently.
A ticket price reduction of more than 10% is especially beneficial for those who rely on air travel as their primary means of homecoming. Given the frequent spikes in airfare during holiday periods, this policy is expected to significantly improve travel accessibility, particularly for those with limited budgets. This concrete step reflects the government’s concern for the purchasing power of the people, which continues to be affected by rising prices of goods and other essential needs.
