World Water Forum 2024 Momentum to Implement the Blue Economy

Bali – Based on the Indonesian Blue Economy Roadmap 2023-2045, the Government projects that the blue economy can create 12 million new jobs by 2030 and provide 40 times the amount of new renewable energy (EBT) by 2050.

Deputy for Economic Affairs, Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said that the 2024 World Water Forum in Bali could be an arena for collaboration between countries to start implementing the blue economy.

“Stakeholders, development partners and other countries are working together with Indonesia in realizing concrete actions for (implementing) a blue economy that can provide prosperity to the people and become an engine for Indonesia’s economic growth,” said Amalia at the Blue Economy Innovation: For Shared event. Prosperity World Water Forum Parallel Event 2024 in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Amalia said the blue economy was designed to support the economic transformation agenda to lead Indonesia out of the trap of a middle-income country

“Because Indonesia must get out of the middle-income trap, without new sources of economic growth, a growth rate of at least 6 percent in the next 20 years will not be achieved. So Indonesia really has to actively look for new sources of economic growth. “Therefore, the blue economy is considered capable of becoming one of the engines driving new economic growth,” said Amalia.

The Deputy for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources at Bappenas, Vivi Yulaswati, expressed the same thing. She hopes that the issue of water scarcity and irrigation systems on small islands will also be a serious discussion at the 10th World Water Forum.

He also considered that collaboration between parties could be one solution to water problems caused by climate change. “For example, the availability of irrigation infrastructure that is able to support fisheries cultivation will also be very important for us in the future, not just limited to routine irrigation for farmers,” concluded Vivi.

Indonesia was chosen as the host of the 10th WWF and carried the main theme a, Bali, Indonesia. This year’s World Water Forum has the big theme ‘Water for Shared Prosperity’. The World Water Forum will take place from 18-25 May 2024.
