Commitment to Overcoming Global Problems, Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, Closes the P20 Summit
The Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, officially closed the meeting of the Chairs of the Parliament of the G20 countries or the 8th G20 Parliamentary Speaker’s Summit on Friday, October 7, 2022. This also ends Indonesia’s chairmanship at the P20 in 2022.
The event which was held for two days has succeeded in producing a new chapter in overcoming various global problems through strengthening multilateralism. In accordance with the theme, namely Stronger Parliament for Sustainable Recovery, the Parliamentary Leaders of the G20 member countries agreed to continue to increase the role of parliament at the global level.
During two days of discussion, parliamentary leaders discussed priority issues ranging from sustainable development, green economy, food and energy security and economic challenges, to gender equality.
Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, who was chair at each discussion session, said that the world’s parliaments agreed that strengthening the role of parliament was a solution in dealing with difficult global situations.
The P20 Summit produced an outcome document in the form of a Chair’s Summary that underlined the following:
Multilateralism is the most effective channel to overcome a variety of common global challenges.
War and armed conflict are threats to global security and order and have a negative impact on food security, energy security, and the global economy.
Urge the G20 countries to redouble efforts to overcome differences, promote peace, and strengthen economic recovery.
The need for effective and innovative financing tools, including mixed finance, to help narrow the SDG financial gap.
The need for a digital economy that is inclusive, open, fair and non-discriminatory and ensures that economic growth must be in line with climate change management.
The importance of realizing the commitment of developed countries to immediately meet the target of USD 100 billion/year until 2025 as well as the commitment to transfer technology to developing countries.
The urgency of gender equality that can bring about greater prosperity and sustainable development for all.
A strong parliament is key to a strong democracy and to ensuring that the well-being and well-being of citizens is at the center of policy-making and legislation.
The points contained in the outcome document are a form of joint commitment from the parliamentary leaders of the G20 countries, which will be input for the Indonesian government, especially in the G20 Summit which will be held in November this year in Bali.
The chairman of the DPR RI also emphasized that the outcome document would be a reference for the parliaments of G20 countries in drafting legislation as well as a reference for the implementation of the next P20 meeting which will be chaired by the Indian Parliament.
