The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution that reaffirms the right to self-determination for peoples and nations subject to colonial, foreign and foreign occupation.
The 193 members of the UN general assembly adopted the resolution by consensus on Wednesday (15/12/2020). The universal realization of people’s right to self-determination ”- clearly states that self-determination is a fundamental right of all people – including those under colonial, foreign and foreign domination. The resolution, co-sponsored by 71 countries, observes that self-determination is a fundamental condition of guaranteeing and adhering to human rights.
Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram said the world body was reaffirming Islamabad’s legal, political and moral case in support of Kashmiris. This statement emphasizes opposition to foreign military intervention, aggression and occupation. The general assembly calls on the responsible States to immediately cease their military intervention in and occupation of foreign countries and territories.
The world body also deplores the plight of the millions of refugees and displaced persons who have been displaced from their lands as a result of these actions and reaffirms their right to return.
With a registered vote of 168 in favor, five against and 10 abstentions, the Assembly then adopted a draft resolution II – “The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.” The resolution reaffirms the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including for an independent Palestinian State.
The General Assembly also declared 31 August as International Day for People of African Descent to promote greater recognition and respect for the diversity of the heritage, culture and contribution of people of African descent to the development of society.
But the General Assembly postponed action on two draft resolutions: “The human rights situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar”, and “a global call for concrete action to eradicate racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance”. The resolution will be reviewed after budget consideration.
Not Papua
The news related to the UN General Assembly resolution was “tried” by a number of people who are suspected of supporting the struggle of separatist groups in Papua, even though the resolution was made because of the problem of acute human rights violence in Kashmir, which was disputed between Pakistan and India and gross human rights violations committed by Myanmar. against the Rohingya Muslim ethnicity.
