The Free Nutritious Meals Program (MBG), initiated by the government under the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto, is a clear demonstration of the state’s commitment to the people, particularly children, who are the future generation of the nation. Executive Director of Trias Politika, Agung Baskoro, stated that MBG is an authentic policy that distinguishes President Prabowo’s administration from previous governments. According to him, this program focuses on the fundamental rights of Indonesian children by providing adequate nutritional intake. He believes that this policy not only addresses the national nutrition challenge but also serves as a strategic step in preparing a healthier and higher-quality generation.
In its implementation, the MBG program has targeted thousands of schools and tens of thousands of students. The government has allocated a substantial budget to ensure the program runs smoothly and reaches its target. The budget allocation of IDR 71 trillion, which will increase to IDR 171 trillion by the end of 2025, reflects the government’s serious commitment to this policy. The main focus is on schools with students from low-income families and regions with high food insecurity.
Deputy Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Fajar Riza Ul Haq, stated that MBG is not just a school meal program but part of a larger effort to improve the quality of national education. The government recognizes that many students arrive at school hungry, which obviously affects their concentration and academic performance. With this program, it is expected that every child can focus better on learning because their nutritional needs are met.
In addition to health benefits, the program also contributes to fostering healthy living habits among students. Chairman of the Gerindra Faction in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Budisatrio Djiwandono, also praised the government’s swift action in realizing the MBG program. According to him, the success of implementing this program in less than one hundred days of the government’s tenure demonstrates the government’s strong commitment to the welfare of the people. He also emphasized that the Gerindra Faction will continue to oversee the program’s implementation to ensure it aligns with the vision set by President Prabowo.
Budisatrio added that this program is more than just the provision of free meals. MBG is a long-term investment in the development of Indonesia’s human resources. By ensuring quality nutrition for children, this program is expected to produce a competitive and productive generation for the upcoming Indonesia Gold 2045 era. Additionally, MBG also has economic and social equity dimensions that can support the growth of the local food industry.
The government is fully aware that the implementation of such a large-scale program is not easy and requires strict oversight. Therefore, the Indonesian National Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) is involved to ensure that every stage of food production, distribution, and consumption in the program meets strict safety and nutritional standards. This is done to minimize risks such as extraordinary events (KLB) or food poisoning.
The success of the MBG program will not only have a positive impact on the health and education of Indonesian children but could also serve as a model policy that inspires other countries.
