Labuan Bajo – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim assessed that the 42nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit or ASEAN Summit had succeeded in increasing various cooperation in the regional area.

These agreements cover the development of the electric car ecosystem, the economy, trade with local currencies, and digital payments between countries in the context of strengthening ASEAN.

Furthermore, the Malaysian PM considered that the various agreements reached at the ASEAN Summit were also concrete evidence that the Association of ASEAN Nations is still very strong even though there are parties who have the perception that the regional bloc is quite weak in overcoming the existing challenges.

Not only that, the Malaysian PM said that the ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific (AOIP) remains the main mechanism in regulating relations between countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

“The leaders have agreed to consolidate their stance and maintain ASEAN’s position as a free zone and avoid getting involved in great power competition,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Timor Leste Taur Matan Ruak expressed his gratitude for Indonesia’s support for Timor Leste to become a full member of ASEAN.

With this support, for the first time, Timor Leste can attend as an observer at the ASEAN Summit which will be held in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara on 10-11 May 2023.

“Thank you to His Excellency Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia, Chair of ASEAN 2023, for his support and commitment so far, for inviting me to participate in this historic summit,” said PM Taur Matan Ruak.

Timor Leste, he added, will comply with the follow-up to the Roadmap which was agreed upon jointly with other ASEAN members.

Timor Leste’s presence at the ASEAN Summit is an honor and a new chapter in the country’s history which will have a positive impact on the economic and social sectors.

“The joining of Timor-Leste is a historic moment. Because it can have a positive impact on various sectors, both economic and social. That way, the various developments that have been carried out can continue to be carried out,” said the Prime Minister of Timor Leste

President Jokowi officially closed the 42nd ASEAN Summit themed ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth, on Thursday (11/5).

Apart from issuing various joint declarations, the 42nd ASEAN Summit agreed on at least 10 new documents in the context of strengthening ASEAN.
