Head of FKUB Jayapura: Hostage by Pilot Susi Air Fatalism Against Changes in Civilization in the Mountains of Papua

Jakarta – The hostage-taking of the Susi Air pilot by KKB Papua has caused a tremendous setback for the people in the mountains of Papua. This was revealed by the Chairman of the Jayapura District Forum for Religious Harmony (FKUB), Albert Yoku, in a dialogue on Kompas TV, Thursday (2/3/2023).

Albert Yoku considers that the pilot is a hero who opened the isolation in Papua and a hero of a new civilization for Papua.

“If this one pilot causes 1,000 pilots not to fly to serve the people in the mountains, this will be a tremendous setback,” he said.

For this reason, continued Albert Yoku, I reminded Egianus that the pilot was a person of merit because he left his family and was ready to take risks in that area, so that the traditional leaders had to talk about the death of development.

According to him, the sacrifice of the pilots was not small to be able to bring civilization and development in mountainous Papua, because they risked their lives with short routes and sometimes bad weather.

Albert Yoku also revealed the term ‘one hearth three stones’, which is usually used for mediation, negotiations based on local wisdom.

“For example, now in this hostage-taking area, actually the role of the Regent together with religious leaders, there is also the role of the government, I really encourage the Indigenous Peoples of the Mountains to play a role in this activity, because those who know the local wisdom approach, in terms of language, culture and others are these three elements that are near and always related personally to all the conditions that exist there. Both in faith, religion and their cultural and customary laws there, “explained Albert Yoku.

Furthermore, Albert Yoku said that ‘one hearth of three stones’ is very effectively used to solve problems that are horizontal conflicts. However, this issue of hostage-taking is a matter of verticality and has already passed the roles of the three “furnaces”.

However, his party remains confident that the government will carry out this vertical task.

“Because this has a very high context and is affiliated with politics and militancy, the role I think is from religious leaders, traditional leaders still have to appeal and remind Egianus’ children, because this is an act of fatalism towards the changes that have been built so far,” said the Head of the District FKUB the Jayapura.

On the same occasion, Political Observer Ikrar Nusa Bhakti also hopes that a security approach will be the last option, but before that there could be a second choice, namely whether it is possible to use a third party as a mediator for these negotiations, but this does take time.

“We have also used third parties in the Aceh conflict and it went well. This good choice would be the right thing, but a priest like Albert Yoku will be the group of clergy and indigenous groups that we choose to use first,” explained Ikrar Nusa Bhakti.

He also believes that religious leaders can unite and have the same vision and desire to solve this problem, and they can resolve conflicts in local customs.

Furthermore, he revealed that this was not the first time the pilot plane had been set on fire by the KKB. In 2021 the same thing happened. Apart from that, according to him, pioneer flights became very important flights.

“This shows how big the role of our brothers who want to go to other areas, because the cost of flying with Susi Air is very minimal, that’s where the importance of pioneering flights, because it not only lifts goods, but also lifts people. So if later there is still an ambush or even arson, it makes us quite sad to hear that,” continued Ikrar Nusa Bhakti.

This political observer considers peace in Papua to be very important, not only for the local people and the Indonesian people as a whole, but also for the international community because of the large number of investments in Papua.

“If there really is no other choice, of course a security approach must be used and must be carefully calculated what will happen in the future,” concluded Ikrar Nusa Bhakti.
