President Jokowi Officially Opens the ASEAN Summit, Reminding the World is Facing a Crisis

Labuan Bajo – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially opened the 42nd ASEAN Summit, Wednesday (10/05), at the Meruorah Hotel, Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara. President Jokowi also conveyed his welcome to the leaders of countries and delegates participating in the ASEAN Summit.

“Welcome to Indonesia, it is an honor for Indonesia to host the ASEAN Summit. Leaders, good morning, today I declare the ASEAN Summit to be opened,” Jokowi said.

In front of ASEAN leaders, Jokowi also called for unity to face global challenges.

“The global economy is currently not fully recovered. Rivalry is getting sharper, and world dynamics are getting more and more unpredictable. With unity, ASEAN will be able to become a central player in bringing peace and economic growth,” President Jokowi added.

In addition, President Jokowi also hopes that in the future ASEAN must strengthen economic integration, maintain inclusive cooperation, implement assets and strengthen the architecture of health, food, energy and financial stability.

“Let’s work hard by making ASEAN Matters the Epicentrum of Growth,” concluded President Jokowi.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Timor Leste, Taur Matan Ruak expressed his gratitude to President Jokowi as Chair of the 2023 ASEAN Summit who invited Timor Leste to attend the 2023 ASEAN Summit.

“Thank you President Joko Widodo as Chair of the 2023 ASEAN Summit for inviting me and it is an honor for me to attend the ASEAN Summit for the first time and of course this is a new chapter in our country’s history,” said PM Taur.

For information, the ASEAN leaders who attended the 42nd ASEAN Summit were Cambodian Prime Minister (PM) Hun Sen, Lao PM Sonexay Siphandone, Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Hassanal Bolkiah, Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong , Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Don Pramudwinai, Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh and Prime Minister of Timor Leste Taur Matan Ruak.
