The 42nd ASEAN Summit Opens, Indonesia Encourages Fast-Growing and Important Economic Regions for the World

West Manggarai – The 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), is expected to make ASEAN a fast-growing, inclusive, and sustainable and competitive economic region. Making ASEAN important, not only for Indonesia, but also for ASEAN and the world.

President Jokowi said that success would only be achieved if all countries, without exception, were committed, worked hard, set aside their differences to produce something concrete and beneficial for the world in the midst of the various challenges it faced. ASEAN countries must be able to unite in order to have a significant role.

“Currently the global economy has not fully recovered, rivalries are getting sharper, world dynamics are increasingly unpredictable, and the question is whether Asean will become a spectator, whether Asean will just remain silent, and whether Asean can become the engine of peace and growth. I’m sure we all believe that Asean can do it, as long as one key is unity, said President Jokowi when opening the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, Wednesday, 10/5/2023.

According to President Jokowi, ASEAN is still important and relevant for the people, for the region, and for the world and ASEAN will continue to contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. In addition, ASEAN will continue to be able to maintain economic growth.

With Asean unity being able to become a central player that will bring peace and growth, we have a strong side as the epicenter of growth, namely an economy that grows far above the world average, then a demographic bonus, and regional stability is maintained so that in the future Asean must be more strengthening its economic integration, strengthening inclusive cooperation, including the implementation of assets, said President Jokowi.

Furthermore, President Jokowi invited all leaders of ASEAN countries to jointly make ASEAN a center of world economic growth.

“Let’s work hard to make ASEAN Matters the Epicentrum of Growth,” added President Jokowi in his opening speech at the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo NTT.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi said, the ASEAN Chair for 2023 takes the theme ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth’, through ASEAN Matters, Indonesia is determined to make ASEAN remain important and relevant to the people of ASEAN and beyond.

“In this regard, ASEAN’s future must begin to be prepared to welcome ASEAN 2025. ASEAN’s centrality must be strengthened so that it is able to maintain peace, stability, prosperity in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific,” said Foreign Minister Retno.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Minister continued, through the sub-theme ‘Epicentrum of Growth’, Indonesia is determined to continue to make Southeast Asia a center of economic growth, where with ASEAN under the sub-theme ‘Epicentrum of Growth’ some cooperation will be strengthened. Among them, regional food security, energy security, health and financial cooperation.

“Indonesia wants to make ASEAN Resilience and become a barometer of cooperation that can contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in the world region,” he said.
