Synergy Between the Central Government and the Papua Barat Provincial Government Realizes the National Food Security Program

MANOKWARI – The Papua Barat Provincial Government has shown a strong commitment to supporting the National Food Security Program by establishing close synergy with the central government. This step is taken to ensure sustainable food security in the region, which plays an essential role in ensuring the availability of food for all Indonesians, particularly in the Papua Barat region.
The Acting Governor of Papua Barat, Ali Baham Tamongmere, stated that the development of the agricultural sector is a primary priority in achieving food security in the province. “Food security is one of the main focuses in building a better Papua Barat. Therefore, we continue to support every effort that can enhance food production and utilize the agricultural potential available,” he explained.
Previously, Assistant II of the Papua Barat Provincial Government, Melkias Werinussa, emphasized that the Papua Barat Provincial Government remains committed to supporting the national food security program as directed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia. “The responsibility for this program is a national obligation that also involves the regional government,” he added.
The synergy between the central government and the Papua Barat Provincial Government is also evident in various programs that support the strengthening of the agricultural sector, such as the provision of superior seeds, farmer training, and assistance with agricultural infrastructure and facilities. The Papua Barat Provincial Government, together with relevant ministries, has designed policies to support the increase in food production, from staple foods such as rice and corn to horticulture and other crops.
According to Agustinus Warbal, Head of the Department of Food Crops, Horticulture, and Plantations (TPHBUN) of Papua Barat, various ongoing programs involve multiple stakeholders, including government agencies, private institutions, and community groups. With good coordination between all parties, food security is expected to be maintained and even improved. “We continue to take concrete and measurable steps to ensure adequate food production, both for local consumption and to meet national needs,” said the Head of the Department.
Furthermore, the Papua Barat Provincial Government is also focusing on enhancing the capacity of local farmers through education and training aimed at improving their skills and knowledge in modern and efficient farming practices. The central government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, is providing full support for the implementation of these programs, including funding and providing facilities needed by farmers in Papua Barat.
National food security, which is a primary priority in national development, is expected to be achieved with solid support and synergy between the central and regional governments. The Papua Barat Provincial Government is committed to continuing collaboration with various parties to realize a food security program that can reduce dependence on imported food and improve the welfare of the community through the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
