Jakarta – Pessimistic narratives like “Indonesia is dark” emerge when the desires of the people are out of sync with the real situation, especially when facing economic pressures or declining incomes.

This was stated by Dr. KH. Marsudi Syuhud, MM, Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), during a discussion on a national television station on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

The MUI Vice Chairman explained that President Prabowo Subianto had strategically set national development priorities as a response to global dynamics that also affect other countries, not just Indonesia.

“The political communication being implemented today has been able to dampen pessimistic and fearful narratives, as these narratives could slow down the spirit of development if they continue to circulate,” he explained.

According to him, President Prabowo’s approach aligns with religious teachings that emphasize the importance of building with a spirit of optimism and togetherness, rather than fear or mutual blame.

“President Prabowo Subianto has prioritized an optimistic approach in managing national resources, balancing needs and realities, and creating a positive narrative in the face of challenges,” he explained.

Furthermore, Marsudi stressed the importance for the public not to be easily provoked by negative narratives and to focus on the opportunities and efforts made by the government to maintain the pace of national development.

Differences in opinion, Marsudi added, should be expressed openly and responsibly, while criticism should be constructive and not create division, so as to foster a collective spirit in nation-building.

Marsudi also believes that national solidarity must be preserved, with community and religious leaders actively promoting unity and reigniting optimism as key assets in achieving Indonesia’s development success.

In the same event, Dr. Aditya Perdana, a Political Communication Expert from the University of Indonesia, noted that President Prabowo’s openness to criticism and input from various parties demonstrates a strong commitment to the principle of deliberative democracy, which deserves appreciation.

Aditya stated that President Prabowo’s success in bringing together various political forces has become a strategic asset in accelerating development and creating government stability in the future.

“This situation should encourage the emergence of national optimism, with the belief that the direction of the government will become more constructive and inclusive,” said Aditya Perdana.

The high expectations of the public regarding government programs, he added, must be managed with honest communication about the challenges faced, in order to avoid bias and disappointment.

He mentioned that the President’s acknowledgment of weaknesses in public communication is a form of political maturity, with a commitment to continue evaluating and improving communication strategies with the cabinet.

“National figures are expected to continue urging the public to maintain harmony, prevent polarization, and strengthen the spirit of nationalism,” he hoped.

Unity and collaboration among all elements of the nation will be the main strength in facing the various challenges and national dynamics ahead.
