Rice: Sampit, Central Kalimantan is developing and registering patent right of seed rice yielding variety local “Siam Epang”.

Central Kalimantan, CIDISS – Rice is staple food to Indonesian people generally. Society felt fidgetiness because the rising of rice Import, lousy rice, till synthetic rice.
National Rice needing is improving fast. Society needs solution beside Import rice policy.
Local rice seed, actually probably develop well and if there is serious concern by government, it will be probably supply national rice needing.
For example Sampit city, Kotawaringin Timur regency, Central Kalimantan, recently is developing rice yielding local variety. The rice seed called “Siam Epang.”
Then, Siam Epang rice seed local yielding Variety was proposed to be national seed rice local variety. Government of Kotawaringin Timur through regional agriculture board of Sampit has developing and registering patent right of seed rice yielding variety local “Siam Epang”.
“Now, is under processing to patent right, because this is special rice of Kotawaringin Timur. The research took long time, about 3 years. Next year, we hope this seed become national variety,” said chief of DP3KP Kotawaringin Timur, I Made Dikantara, like quote in Sampit Online.com, Saturday (6/6/2015).
He claimed that Siam Epang has superior quality, which is aromatic rice, high production, and more endure to plant disease. Besides that, in one hectare rice field farmer harvest 6,7 ton dry rice. The harvest assumed more than other kind of rice with average on 4 till 5 ton per hectare.
“The stock of Siam Epang is enough, it was because farmer has cultivated since long time, then we will patent it. The price also more expensive because good on quality, per Kg sold on 12 thousand,” said Made.
