Jakarta — The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) once again demonstrated its active role in promoting multilateral cooperation on strategic global issues through its participation in the 19th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC). Held in Jakarta from May 12 to 15, 2025, the forum highlighted the importance of clean water access, youth empowerment, and environmental protection as key pillars of sustainable development in OIC member countries.

Fathi, a member of the DPR RI’s Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP), emphasized the urgency of providing safe and clean water access—especially for communities in remote, outermost, and underdeveloped regions—during the 11th Meeting of the Specialised Standing Committee on Economic Affairs and the Environment.

“Indonesia has proposed a draft urging access to safe and clean water, especially for people living in remote areas that still lack infrastructure, unlike urban populations,” Fathi stated.

He further asserted that clean water access is a national priority aligned with the directives of the President of Indonesia. “We must be independent and ensure broad access to water for all people, because water is a fundamental element of human life,” he stressed.

Fathi also highlighted PUIC as an effective platform for voicing concerns on environmental and humanitarian issues. “I believe the PUIC is a highly effective forum for creating a better world,” added the Democrat Party politician.

Meanwhile, Ravindra Airlangga, Deputy Chair of BKSAP DPR RI, reiterated DPR’s support for strategic interventions in the economic sector during the session on May 12, 2025. He underscored the importance of empowering the younger generation, conserving water resources, and protecting the environment.

According to data from SESRIC, youth aged 15–24 in OIC countries number around 350 million—approximately 29% of the global youth population.
“Youth are the driving force of the new economy. We at the DPR RI serve as regulators, facilitators, and enablers to foster an ecosystem that supports the emergence of young, innovative, and adaptive problem-solvers,” Ravindra explained.

Delegates from Türkiye and Tunisia also echoed the need for balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. In the discussion, DPR RI emphasized that the water crisis and ecosystem degradation cannot be resolved without cross-border collaboration and the active participation of all societal elements.

With the theme “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience,” the 19th PUIC Forum brought together 38 countries from the total 54 OIC member states. Chair of BKSAP DPR RI, Mardani Ali Sera, stated that the PUIC aims to strengthen solidarity among Islamic nations and advocate shared interests through legislative cooperation.

Indonesia’s success in promoting these strategic agendas reflects DPR RI’s strong commitment to supporting the welfare of the ummah through parliamentary diplomacy.
