Red and White Cooperative and More Equal Distribution of Job Opportunities
By: Ricky Rinaldi
Equal employment opportunities are a crucial component of national economic development, which continues to be strengthened through various more inclusive policies. Ongoing economic growth is driving the opening of business and employment opportunities in various regions, including those outside growth centers. Within this framework, strengthening cooperatives as a people-oriented economic instrument has again received attention, one example being the Red and White Cooperative initiative, which aims to expand access to employment in a more equitable and sustainable manner.
Cooperatives were designed from the outset as an economic model that places community participation as its primary foundation. Through the direct involvement of members in economic activities, cooperatives not only create business opportunities but also strengthen independence. Therefore, cooperatives exist not merely as business entities but as instruments of social and economic empowerment that strengthen community solidarity and resilience.
President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that economic development must deliver tangible benefits to the wider community. Equal employment opportunities are crucial for creating social stability and reducing regional disparities. Within this framework, cooperatives are seen as a means of strengthening local economies while opening up new business opportunities in various regions.
The Merah Putih Cooperative (Koperasi Merah Putih) presents an approach that places communities as the primary actors in economic development. Through a member-based system, the cooperative encourages direct community involvement in productive activities. This scheme enables job creation not only in the trade sector but also in agriculture, fisheries, home industries, and services.
Minister of Cooperatives Ferry Juliantono emphasized that cooperatives have significant potential to create a more equitable economic distribution. Strengthening cooperatives should not only focus on institutional aspects but also on increasing business capacity for sustainable growth. With appropriate policy support, cooperatives can become centers of economic growth at the local level.
The distribution of job opportunities through cooperatives differs from large-scale investment. While large investments tend to be concentrated in specific areas, cooperatives can expand across various regions to meet community needs. This makes cooperatives an effective tool for expanding job access to areas previously untouched by industrialization.
In addition to creating jobs, cooperatives also strengthen the economic independence of communities. Cooperative members act not only as workers but also as business owners. This model creates a strong sense of ownership in the economic activities they undertake. Profits are not concentrated in a few hands but are redistributed to members.
The Merah Putih Cooperative can also provide a platform for young people to engage in productive economic activities. Amidst the challenges of limited formal employment opportunities, cooperatives offer a more flexible, collaboration-based alternative. Young people can utilize cooperatives as a space for innovation, whether in the digital sector, modern agriculture, or creative businesses.
In the context of regional development, cooperatives have the potential to become a driver of community-based economic growth. By leveraging local potential, cooperatives can create value chains that involve surrounding communities. This approach helps reduce dependence on economic centers while strengthening regional economic resilience.
However, strengthening cooperatives is not without challenges. Issues such as access to capital, management capacity, and technological adaptation remain obstacles that need to be addressed. The government strives to provide support through training, mentoring, and access to financing to ensure cooperatives can develop sustainably.
Digitalization also presents a significant opportunity to expand the role of cooperatives. By leveraging technology, cooperatives can reach a wider market and improve operational efficiency. Digital transformation helps cooperatives adapt to changing consumption patterns and the dynamics of the modern economy.
The success of the Merah Putih Cooperative depends heavily on community participation. Cooperatives will only thrive if members are actively involved in business management and development. Collective awareness of the importance of a community-based economy is a key asset in strengthening the cooperative movement.
Furthermore, cooperatives can also serve as a means of strengthening family economies. When communities have access to productive businesses within their own communities, dependence on labor migration to large cities can be reduced. This creates a balance in development between regions and strengthens the economies of both villages and rural areas.
The Merah Putih Cooperative is not solely focused on economic profit but also on creating a more equitable business ecosystem. By involving members as key actors, the cooperative creates a space for community growth. This model is crucial amidst the need for a more inclusive and inequality-resistant economic system.
Through cooperatives, communities are not merely spectators of economic development but also key actors, helping to determine the direction of growth. The Red and White Cooperative symbolizes that strong economic development must be built on public participation. With the support of appropriate policies and community involvement, cooperatives can be a crucial foundation for creating more equitable employment opportunities throughout Indonesia.
