retno palupiIndonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said that she had been sent by President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo to meet with the King of Saudi Arabia and the Iranian President.

“(I have been sent by the President) to bring a letter from the President for both leaders,” Retno said in Jakarta on Saturday (9/1).

Retno also said that she had already communicated with Foreign Affairs Ministers from both sides.

She also said that Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Iran are arranging time so that Retno can meet with leaders of the two nations.

“We’re certainly hoping it can be done immediately, but once again, we are arranging the time,” she said, adding that Indonesia very much cares about the worsening relations between the two countries.

According to her, the latest development and stability in the Middle East very much affects the stability of world security and especially to the stability in the Middle East region itself.

Retno admitted that this issue is very ‘difficult and complex’, so concrete measures to restore relations between the two countries will depend on the dialogs later on.

“We are going to further intensify the dialogs because one again, the issue is not as simple as we thought it was,” she added.

She also hoped that relations between the two countries could be restored and Indonesia will be ready to provide assistance if there are measures that need to be taken to restore the situation.
