Palm Oil Waste will be converted to Electric

CIDISS – Palm oil is promising commodity as source income and adding the job vacancy. The Palm Oil plantation is quite large. Palm fruit is processed into cooking oil, butter, etc. The waste of palm oil is developing as fuel oil. Besides that, today palm oil also develops as electric energy.

Directorate General of Renewable Energy and Energy Conversion, Ministry of energy and mineral resources, Rida Mulyana said the party is developing program to Liquid waste utilization of palm oil to be converted into electrical energy.

“We are designing a special mandatory program to take advantage of POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) into electricity,” he said as quoted in Antara.

The Ministry of Energy is discussing regulation with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (KLHK) regarding the obligation of palm oil mill effluent utilizes palm oil into electricity. There are currently more than 800 palm oil mills in Sumatra and Kalimantan, which resulted in both liquid and solid waste.

Solid waste palm oil can be processed into biomass energy supply source to a capacity of 700 megawatts (MW). While wastewater containing methane should be processed into biogas, but often waste burned by oil mills that could potentially damage the environment. Not only environmentally friendly utilization of waste oil, but also provide economic benefits for palm oil mills.
