Nusa Dua, the Opening of the 144th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) or 144th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly & Related Meetings, which took place in Nusa Dua Bali, is a form of international trust in Indonesia as a world leader.

The chairman of the DPR RI, Puan Maharani, said that the opening of the IPU session would be attended by 115 countries and a delegation of 1000 people. Meanwhile, the chairman of the IPU state parliament who attended was 33 people. This is a matter of pride for Indonesia, which is entrusted to host the IPU in 2022.

“Of course, this also proves that Indonesia is a country that is trusted by the international community because it is considered capable, comfortable and safe in organizing the 144th IPU,” explained Puan in Nusa Dua (19/3).

Indonesia is considered to have extraordinary ability in organizing international scale events. Indonesia has a lot of experience and also adequate facilities in organizing big events, said Puan.

The chairman of the DPR RI revealed that the opening of the 144th IPU could be a momentum to introduce Indonesia to be taken into account by the international community. This at the same time dispels the stigma that Indonesia does not have abundant natural resources, but its human resources can also be more calculated for the progress of Indonesia.

In addition, the Coordinating Minister for Human Empowerment and Culture (PMK) for the 2014-2019 period also mentioned Indonesia’s position and its role in being able to complete international policies together.

“The theme of the IPU this time is about climate change and of course we will discuss other themes. Starting with the Covid-19 pandemic, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), gender equality, democracy and human rights, as well as how Peace and security in the world can be created as a unit,” said Puan.

Meanwhile, IPU President Duarte Pacheco appreciated Indonesia as the host of this IPU session. “All of us, IPU and Indonesia share the same values. We are all trying to work together in overcoming climate change as well as building society and promoting democracy,” he explained.

IPU is a cross-border inter-Parliamentary collaboration which is the second largest democratic forum in the world after the United Nations (UN).
