Supporting Legal Action Against OPM

19

In response to the escalation of violence that continues to increase in Papua, especially involving the Free Papua Organization (OPM), they feel the urgency to act decisively. Law enforcement against OPM is seen as a necessary step to maintain Indonesia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. As a sovereign country, Indonesia has an obligation to protect its territory from all forms of threats that could disrupt stability and security. OPM, with its separatist agenda, is considered a serious threat to state sovereignty and territorial integrity. Therefore, legal action against this organization is considered an effort to defend the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

A number of statements from important figures, such as Deputy Chairman of Commission III DPR RI Ahmad Sahroni, Co-Founder of the Institute for Security and Strategic Studies (ISESS) Khairul Fahmi, and Head of the TNI Information Center (Kapuspen) Major General TNI Nugraha Gumilar, highlighted the need for full support from all parties, including the government, DPR, TNI and Polri, in an effort to eradicate OPM.

Deputy Chairman of Commission III DPR RI Ahmad Sahroni underlined that there is no room for doubt in eradicating threats to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). His statement reflects a strong commitment to confront OPM with all available strength. He also highlighted the importance of protecting civilians and security forces from threats posed by the OPM, which often claimed innocent victims.

In line with Sahroni, Co-Founder of the Institute for Security and Strategic Studies (ISESS) Khairul Fahmi emphasized the need for political support from the executive and legislature to ensure that the TNI-Polri have a clear mandate in dealing with OPM. It is hoped that consistent political support at all levels of government will dispel doubts and enable the decisive steps needed to address the threat.

Support for legal action against OPM is also based on the need to maintain peace and stability in the Papua region. By cracking down on organizations involved in separatist activities, it is hoped that peace and stability can be restored in the region, allowing development and economic progress to take place without disruption.

Regarding enforcement efforts, Bambang Soesatyo from the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) emphasized the need for firm action against the OPM which has long been a source of instability in Papua. He highlighted the dangers posed by OPM’s actions, including attacks on civilians, security forces and infrastructure. A combined approach between harsh action and a humanist non-violent approach is considered the right strategy to reduce conflict in Papua.

In facing this complex challenge, it is important for the government, DPR, TNI and Polri to unite in forming a strong consensus and taking concrete steps to overcome OPM. Support from all elements of society, including religious leaders, traditional leaders and local leaders, is also very necessary to ensure the success of this effort.

Apart from that, active participation from the community is also very important in supporting the firm actions taken by the TNI-Polri in eradicating OPM. The community has a key role in providing intelligence information, supporting the presence of security forces in their area, and building close cooperation with the authorities in efforts to prevent and prosecute separatist groups.

Community support and participation not only includes reporting suspicious activities, but also includes efforts to build a better understanding of the values of unity and integrity and the importance of maintaining mutual peace and security. Collaboration between the TNI-Polri and the community can strengthen synergy in fighting the OPM threat, so that enforcement efforts can run more effectively and efficiently. Thus, actively involving the community in efforts to eradicate OPM is not only an obligation, but also an investment in building a solid foundation for peace and progress in the Papua region.

Ultimately, legal action against OPM must be balanced with inclusive and sustainable development efforts in Papua. Only with a holistic and integrated approach, which includes law enforcement, infrastructure development and community empowerment, can Indonesia achieve its goal of creating peace, security and prosperity for all its people, including in the Papua region.

Overall, supporting legal action against OPM is an important step in efforts to maintain sovereignty, maintain peace, and end the cycle of violence in Papua. However, legal action must also be balanced with a commitment to addressing the root causes of the conflict and ensuring that human rights and the rule of law are fully respected. Only with a comprehensive and sustainable approach can Papua achieve peace, stability and sustainable progress.
