The lively discussion regarding the Omnibus Law Bill was marked by thousands of workers holding a rally at the House of Representatives on January 20, 2020). They protested what was referred to as the Draft Omnibus law, especially the Cipta Karya Kerja. The government is ready to submit two Draft Laws to the House of Representatives namely the Draft Omnibus Law on Employment Copyright and the Draft Omnibus Law on Taxation. In the previous omnibus law drafting process, the workers and employers have been invited by the government for dialogue, but workers’ demonstrations are inevitable.
Both of the Draft Omnibus Laws are prepared to strengthen the national economy through the improvement of Indonesia’s investment ecosystem and competitiveness, particularly in the face of uncertainty and a slowdown in the global economy. However, the workers rejected the Omnibus Law and threatened that if the regulation was passed, the workers would hold strikes throughout Indonesia. Issues related to labor welfare are easily misused for certain parties to create unhealthy situations and provoke the masses. However, it should be recognized that currently the Omnibus Law is only limited to the Draft Law and there has not been an official draft circulating regarding this matter. Therefore, it would be nice if our attitude awaits an official announcement related to the Draft Omnibus Law and does not move only because of an issue.
