The world is waiting for real action from Indonesia to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian war

Jakarta- Former Indonesian Ambassador to Ukraine Yuddy Chrisnandi stated that Indonesia’s real action in resolving the war between Israel and Palestine is being awaited by the world.

This is because Islamic countries, which are members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), do not have as much bargaining power as Indonesia.

“OIC countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates do not have as much bargaining power as Indonesia in voicing the interests of Muslims,” said Yuddy in the Moya Institute Webinar entitled “Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: Opportunities for Resolution” on Friday (17/11/ 2023).

The Golkar Party politician continued, if all Muslims in Arab countries were gathered into one, they would still not be able to match the number of Muslims in Indonesia. This portfolio is what makes Indonesia’s role anticipated in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, compared to Arab countries whose stance is unclear.

On the same occasion, Prof. Abdul Mu’ti as General Secretary of PP Muhammadiyah viewed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from several dimensions.

The first dimension is the theological dimension. Abdul Mu’ti stated that this conflict was caused by the theological claims of the Zionists who view the land of Palestine as the land of their ancestors.

However, continued Mu’ti, the second dimension, namely politics, was also strong in the Israeli-Palestinian war. Therefore, Muhammadiyah considered a political solution more suitable to resolve the war.

“And a two-state solution or a two-state solution is the most logical solution for resolving the conflict between the two nations, because according to the Israeli people they also have the right to live in that area, it’s just that so far they have been occupying Palestinian land, which is considered colonialism. ” said Mu’ti.

Meanwhile, the Chancellor of General Achmad Yani University, Prof. Dr. Hikmahanto Juwana stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has qualified as a war criminal for his actions in attacking Gaza, Palestine.
But the problem is that Israel is not a party to the Rome Statute (1998), which allows him to be tried by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

However, it could also be done through another mechanism, namely a Security Council (DK-PBB) resolution. The UN Security Council could actually issue a resolution mandating the ICC to try Israeli leaders.

“But, in the future, the US will definitely veto this at the UN Security Council, so the world body will actually be like a ‘toothless tiger’,” he stressed.

Then, Prof. Imron Cotan, as an observer of strategic and global issues, believes that there are fundamental differences between Jews and the Zionist movement. Jews are generally good, because they have similar religious rules with Islam.

Meanwhile, Zionism is a political movement that wants the formation of a Jewish state on Palestinian land, rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state. And now these Zionists are in power in the Israeli government through the extreme right group led by Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Therefore, it is not surprising that some time ago one of the Israeli Ministers, Amihay Eliyahu, stated that it would be better if a nuclear bomb were dropped on Gaza.” Even though the casualties on the Palestinian side have reached 12,000, half of them are babies and children.

“Eliyahu’s statement was deeply regretted by various groups, because after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, the world was guided by the nuclear taboo, which holds the view that although certain countries are allowed to have nuclear weapons, they are morally not permitted to use them,” said Imron.

In the context of resistance, Palestinian forces have the right to take steps to free themselves from Israeli colonialism. However, what big countries, especially the US, are echoing is Israel’s right to defend itself, after the Hamas attack on October 7. Forgetting the fact that the Palestinian people have been oppressed for 75 years (Nakba, 1948).

Meanwhile, Hery Sucipto, Executive Director of the Moya Institute, expressed deep concern and anger at the humanitarian tragedy that occurred in Gaza.

Moreover, more than 50 percent of the victims of Israeli attacks were babies and children. And this is the largest number of victims since the 2000 Intifada.

“Therefore, the Moya Institute took the initiative to hold this webinar to analyze developments that have occurred, read about possible potential solutions, including reviewing possible steps that Indonesia can take to play a more active role in efforts to create peace between Palestine and Israel,” he said.
