December 1 is often celebrated as a celebration of the anniversary of the Free Papua Organization (OPM). The TNI / Polri is expected to anticipate the potential for riots and violence given the frequent occurrence of these groups of committing heinous acts before their birthday celebrations. Although the government claimed there was no special anticipation in case of preceding the OPM Anniversary on December 1, but vigilance was still improved. Not without reason, given the high level of separatism of the OPM who will be determined to do anything to realize its goals. Namely, free from NKRI and stand alone. The Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security, Mahfud MD, appealed to all parties to be aware of political propaganda that might be raised to create chaos in Papua on the anniversary of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) on 1 December 2019.
According to him, it was important to pay attention so that Papua was politically careful because in terms of security it had met the standards. The concern is, provocations and news that are not true and cause noise. He claimed that the security forces had prepared a strategy in the event that something untoward happened before the momentum of the OPM Anniversary. The security approach taken by the authorities is ensured according to standard operation procedure (SOP).
If there is a violation of SOP, it will be immediately dealt with, including if it is done by an internal party. Mahfud did not specify in detail the steps to be taken by the authorities to anticipate riots. He admitted this was a secret. He explained that the MRP (Papuan People’s Assembly) rejection of the planned expansion in the Bumi Cendrawasih region. He considered that the plan was a request from the Papuan people themselves to President Jokowi some time ago. If it turns out that in practice there are those who disagree, this is natural. Because, indeed from the beginning various developments in a number of sectors in Papua experienced a process of intimidation to violence.
Speaking of OPM, of course they still remember the separatist leader Benny Wenda. Benny, who allegedly masterminded a number of riots, reportedly visited the UN session in New York some time ago. Benny is said to be lobbying for the UN Human Rights Commissioner to visit Indonesia and see first hand the conditions in Papua. Heats up conditions in Papua and West Papua also allegedly involved Benny’s interference in it. He is considered to be spreading provocative content and hoaxes on the internet, especially social media, telephone connections and WhatsApp messaging applications regarding Papu.a In fact, this content is also thrown at a number of high-ranking officials in Pacific countries.
However, the Head of the Public Information Bureau of the Police Public Relations Division Brigadier General (Pol) Dedi Prasetyo stated, the police were difficult to process the law because Benny’s citizenship as well as the crime scene was in London, England. Another OPM figure who is known to be extreme and heinous is Goliath Tabuni. Goliath, who was lined up as the highest commander of the organization, did not hesitate to slaughter the residents, especially those who did not support the movement that sheltered him. He was also considered to have the guts against the authorities. As if he was not afraid to realize the ideals so that Papua could be taken from the Republic of Indonesia. The latest news says that Goliat shot Brigadier Hedar, a member of the National Police while conducting an investigation related to this OPM. This action was allegedly an act of revenge, because many members of Goliath were killed at the hands of the authorities.
The movement of the OPM frontman is considered quite slippery. So that the arrest effort is enough energy and mind. However, the joint TNI-Polri continued to move to apprehend along with members of this hardliner group. Based on this, all TNI and Polri officers must take anticipatory steps. bearing in mind these separatist figures can do anything to pass their objectives. It is not impossible if the momentum of the OPM Anniversary will be used as an excuse to do unexpected things. It is worried that civilians who don’t know anything will become victims of this organization’s violence. Because, OPM often threatens hostage-taking actions to intimidate security forces.
It is indeed not easy, but the increase in vigilance ahead of this vulnerable day is noteworthy. So that the safety and comfort of the community members can be maintained optimally. It is hoped that the government and the authorities will be able to repel OPM leaders and their accomplices. So that they are aware, that nothing can separate Papua from the Unitary Republic of Indonesia!
